I make stuff happen

Hello. I'm Tom Scott. These are the commercial things I've made.
You should email me if you want something made too.

UtilityServe

A modernisation of a very old and clunky design, the brief for UtilityServe was to give a modern look while preserving and making legible the sometimes lengthy content pages within. The final design is lightweight, attractive, works across browsers, and includes sIFR Flash Text Replacement for attractive headlines.

UtilityServe has since been acquired by another company; this link goes to a screenshot of the former design.

App in a Box

This site makes Facebook applications from scratch in about 5 minutes, and hosts them for free. It's one of the biggest projects I've ever put together, and it continues to evolve as I add requested features.

UKGameshows.com

This site was a complete redesign from an old, plain HTML site to a brand new Wiki database. Design and installation was down to me; a small crack commando team of data wranglers and editors got the data transferred over. It's now easily updatable by any number of people, and more active than it ever was before.

On A Pirate Ship

Every charity single needs a video, and this one for the Talk Like A Pirate Day 2007 event worked very well. Animated in After Effects with character art provided by Chris Hoyle, the pirates were placed within a 3D environment, and virtual camera moves used to give a cinematic feel to the final product.

High Street Headache

For the launch of the new Nokia shop, I put together a fast, entertaining Frogger clone called "High Street Headache". Despite working a tight deadline, I still managed to add a high score tracker, and – at the client's request – the ability for the game owner to change any text in the game at will, without having to edit the Flash file.

Suzie Hayman: Agony Aunt

BBC TV and magazine agony aunt Suzie Hayman wanted a new site that she could add to and edit at will, without needing special tools. Based on WordPress, with a new, from-scratch design, this site works as a home page, a weblog, and a sales tool. It also includes PayPal integration for fast credit card transactions.

Bremner, Bird and Fortune:
The Presidential Races

For the end of an episode of Channel 4's Bremner Bird and Fortune, I made a 45-second animation in 48 hours, recasting the US presidential race as an episode of Wacky Races. Backed up by a great soundtrack from Music by Design and a fantastic voiceover, it got laughs - and in the end that's what counts.

Supersize Celebs

I built the Flash game and the PHP/MySQL code for Supersize Celebs, a viral game for LA Fitness which became one of the simplest, but most successful, commercial games I've designed. The questions, and photos, could be changed by the game owner using a simple XML file. The game's site has since closed, and copyrights mean that I can't repost it.

Diva Magazine's "Pimp Your Girlfriend"

This game for Diva, a leading lesbian magazine, promotes subscriptions and a prize draw thorugh a simple click-and-drag Flash "dress-up" game. I put it together to a very tight deadline, based on artwork and a brief from the client. The final game is lightweight but effective, a testament to what can be done in a very short time.

I make things

I'm not just a web designer — I make things. I've done videos for The Viral Factory and w00tmedia, too, and I've had stuff on BBC One and Channel 4.

The closest I've come to a job description would be "Maker of Web Stuff".

I can make stuff for you too, even if it's just a regular web site – email me!

Hire Me

For Web Stuff

I design accessible, modern, standards-based sites that work for everyone, work for Google, and are easy to maintain. I'm fluent in HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I can also integrate applications into Facebook.

I'm not someone's thirteen-year-old kid who just got a copy of Microsoft FrontPage free with his computer.

I'm not as cheap as the thirteen-year-old kid, but I'm pretty reasonable.

For Video Stuff

Most of my recent work is for viral agencies, and is under NDA or not yet published, but if you'd like some references, feel free to email me. Some of my non-profit public work's linked on the right.
